Kim Salinas, Ladyfeet, 2009, oil on canvas, 20” x 20”.

Jonathan and I recently celebrated our anniversary! For a joint gift, we purchased a painting by Kim Salinas. Kim has a studio near Jonathan’s in Alexander Hall. I saw this painting every time I visited his studio and fell in love with it. Kim attributes her method of painting to Raphael Rubenstein’s Provisional Painting movement. Buying art is a memorable experience—not for the transaction, but for the reasons the piece resonates with you and the emotions or memories it evokes time after time. I am so happy to hang Ladyfeet in our apartment! View more of her work from this series here.

Born in a small town in North Louisiana, I have been painting and drawing all my life. I currently live and work in Savannah, GA and I am an MFA Candidate at Savannah College of Art and Design.
Primarily working in oil on canvas, I think of my work as an adventure in self-
discovery. Though beginning the work with a certain feeling or issue, I use it only as a point of departure. Working intuitively, a narrative emerges as forms become characters. Characters interact with each other. These interactions become the content of the painting, though it is not important the the viewer be privy to these theatrics. Formal issues vie for control over content: I am interested in playful, high-key, decorative visuals that cloak threatening or slightly disturbing contents.

About

Jumpsuits & Teleporters is a blog about art, science, technology, and cultural bricolage.

Author

Hi! My name is Whitney Dail. I am an emerging cultural worker, arts administrator, and STEM to STEAM advocate who was raised in the DC/MD area with two brothers, a computer technician and an architect, by a Naval aviator-engineer and artist-entrepreneur. I have a Master’s in Arts Administration from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). My goal is to explore relationships between art, science, and technology through writing, curating, and contributing to multidisciplinary creative communities.
