Did you know that Russia had a Shuttle Program? The Buran program (meaning “blizzard” in Russian) was short-lived. It completed only one unmanned space flight in 1988 before cutting the program in 1993 due to costs. This image is an illustration of early concepts for the orbiter plane that was published in “Teknika Molodezhi” in 1970 (courtesy Avi Abrams). Read about the Soviet Shuttle Program on Dark Roasted Blend and see photos of the Buran orbiter.
